The General Council of Psychology has long been seriously concerned about mental health care in Spain. This concern is even greater when we look at the deficient care available to prevent and treat psychological problems in children and adolescents.
In addition to the ills that afflict adult care, such as the scarcity of personal and material resources, or the excessive use of pharmacology to the detriment of other forms of psychological treatment that are as effective or more effective, but with fewer undesirable side effects, child and adolescent care must add the lack of specialised staff and the systematic neglect of prevention and early intervention.
The collegiate organisation of psychology wants to commit itself to the development of a debate in which all affected sectors within Spanish society contribute to the implementation of measures to improve the prevention and treatment of psychological problems in minors. To this end, it has been proposed to develop a White Paper on Child and Adolescent Mental Health that takes into account the diversity and extent of the problem, and the best answers that science can provide for its solution.
This volume is a first step. It shows what scientific research says about the nature and extent of the main mental health problems affecting children, the effects they have on them and their environment, and the main factors influencing their development. A second volume will address the current situation in the field of prevention and treatment, as well as the lack and training of specialists in the fields of health, education and services.
