They tell me: ‘focus and stop doing that. It’s nonsense, it’s in your head and you should control it’ and that doesn’t help, but rather makes it worse, because it lacks support. (young PEP)
At the FUNDANEED FOUNDATION we work to give visibility, disseminate and treat those children, adolescents and young people who suffer from some type of mental disorder or illness, taking care of their mental health and the emotional well-being of them and their families. Adolescence and early adulthood is a critical period of life for a person’s mental health. 70% of disorders manifest themselves with their first changes or symptoms before the age of 18. According to the FAD’s II Youth Barometer of Health and Wellbeing, published in 2019, almost half of the young Spanish population between 15 and 29 years old (48.9%) considers that they have had some mental health problem. The long-term consequences are direct. The onset of mental illness in childhood and adolescence is associated with a wide range of complications in adulthood. They can interfere, often temporarily, with the development of a full life. Most have their onset before reaching the age of majority, although clear symptoms appear after a while. Early identification, that is, during adolescence, reduces its impact and ensures a higher quality of life.
