Sounds such as an ambulance siren or firecrackers can disrupt the daily life of a person with autism, who may even panic. “It allows us to go out in the street, sometimes we used to avoid it”, celebrates the father of a child with autism spectrum disorder.
People with autism can find going outside challenging. Excessive sounds such as an ambulance siren, firecrackers or a barking dog can make them panic.
By connecting to the headphones, the app works like a sound airbag, cancelling the noises that might bother them and silencing their fears. This is explained by Alfredo Pérez, head of innovation services at Samsung Iberia, who adds that the app analyses sounds from outside and from the mobile phone, cancelling those it considers disturbing.
José Antonio Maleno, father of a child with autism spectrum disorder, is pleased that advances such as this app allow them to “go out in the street”, something they sometimes avoided in order to avoid the “threat” in the form of annoying sounds.
The app has three modes: Content, Concentration or Calm. The latter is the one that allows the user to relax in the middle of a possible crisis. Paediatric neurologist Alfonso Amado explains that it is the sound itself that can bring the patient out of an anxiety attack.
